8 tips for a thorough spring cleaning

A new season has totally begun and for some it has already started itching to get their house out of its winter sleep. I collected eight tips for a thorough spring cleaning in order to get your house totally ready for spring.

1. Sweep away the dust

If you’re planning on doing the job properly, you shouldn’t skip any room. Always start from the top, for example the window frames or the upper side of a closet, and work your way to the floor. Vacuum the remaining dust afterwards. Also, clean one room at a time. When you want to do everything at once, you will be lost.

2. Clean all rugs, plaids and cushions

Rugs, plaids, cushions, they all gather extremely much dust. That’s why you should clean them at least once a year. Use a washing machine and vacuum cleaner or an industrial cleaner (you can often rent this at a DIY store). You could also go outside and shake it out.

3. Do not forget the walls and ceiling

If your house has rough wallcoverings, they might also gather dust easily. Face this challenge with the vacuum cleaner. A colourful feather duster might also help! The kitchen walls, on the other hand, can be very greasy, use a degreaser for this problem. Besides, the extractor hood needs cleaning once in a while too.

4. Treat your wooden floor

Once a year is enough to give your oiled wooden floor that extra nourishing treatment. You can do this by simply adding a product to the water and mop your floor. Scrubbing and polishing are no longer needed! Personally, I always go for WOCA products, a Danish collection of natural soaps and maintenance products for wooden floors. I use the natural soap for regular cleaning and the oil refresher once or twice a year.

5. Wash the curtains

Many curtains can go right into the washing machine. Always check carefully the washing instructions though, so there won’t be any surprises. If necessary, you could have a professional taking care of cleaning delicate curtains. Most of the time it’s only afterwards that you realise how dirty they actually were.

 6. The windows

It makes no sense hanging up clean curtains in front of dirty windows. Try to avoid this chore when it’s too sunny. It’s very difficult to do the job when the sun keeps drying up the water on your windows. It’s very likely to have streaks afterwards,  and moreover you will be sweaty and completely torn J. I use a cleaning product with a high alcohol content especially for windows. Highly recommended!

7. The bedroom

Flip your mattress so it won’t age on one side. Change your winter duvet for a summer version and clean the pillows. Most pillows can go directly into the washing machine, check the label first…

8. The wardrobe

We barely needed our warm woollen coats and thick sweaters in the past months, nor will we need them in the coming weeks. Go for it and eliminate all the pieces you won’t be wearing during spring and summer. Store your winter clothes and make room for fresh summer colours!
